Eating Tips for The Holidays

1. Avoid carrot sticks. Anyone who puts carrots on a holiday buffet table knows nothing of the Christmas spirit. In fact, if you see carrots, leave immediately. Go next door, where they're serving rum balls.

2. Drink as much eggnog as you can and quickly. You can't find it any other time of year but now. So drink up! Who cares that it has 10,000 calories in every sip? It's not as if you're going to turn into an "eggnog-aholic" or something. It's a treat. Enjoy it!!!! Have one for me. Have two. It's later than you think. It's Christmas!

3. If something comes with gravy, use it. That's the whole point of gravy. Gravy does not stand-alone. Pour it on Make a volcano out of your mashed potatoes. Fill it with gravy. Eat the volcano. Repeat.

4. As for mashed potatoes, always ask if they're made with skim milk or whole milk. If it's skim, pass. Why bother? It's like buying a sports car with an automatic transmission.

5. Do not have a snack before going to a party in an effort to control your eating. The whole point of going to a Christmas party is to eat other people's food for free. Lots of it. Hello???

6. Under no circumstances should you exercise between now and New Year's. You can do that in January when you have nothing else to do. This is the time for long naps, which you'll need after circling the buffet table while carrying a 10-pound plate of food and that vat of eggnog.

7. If you come across something really good at a buffet table, like frosted Christmas cookies in the shape and size of Santa, position yourself near them and don't budge. Have as many as you can before becoming the center of attention. They're like a beautiful pair of shoes. If you leave them behind, you're never going to see them again.

8. Same for pies. Apple, pumpkin and mincemeat - have a slice of each. Or, if you don't like mincemeat, have two apples and one pumpkin. Always have three. When else do you get to have more than one dessert?

9. Did someone mention fruitcake? Granted, it's loaded with the mandatory celebratory calories, but avoid it at all cost. I mean, have some standards.

10. One final tip: If you don't feel terrible when you leave the party or get up from the table, you haven't been paying attention. Reread tips: Start over, but hurry, January is just around the corner.

They’ve charged Fritzner Lindor, 60, with running the unlicensed station. He could get five years in prison and face a $10,000 fine. The sheriff’s office says the station was broadcasting on 94.7 FM from Lindor’s garage using a generator in a pickup truck parked in the home’s driveway. The Florida Times-Union reports Clear Channel tipped off the FCC in late-April. FCC field agents confirmed the station was unauthorized last week, and within 48-hours the Sheriff’s Office had a search warrant and moved in. Florida’s been a hotbed of pirate radio, but local police there have also been more active in shutting down stations than in any other state. Anybody see a pattern here with the "Tip Off's"? 3 cups Strong, hot coffee

1 1/2 cups Granulated sugar (or 12 packets or tablespoons of Splenda)

4 cups Milk

2 cups Half-and-half cream

1 1/2 teaspoons Vanilla

Prep: In a freezer-safe bowl, stir coffee and (splenda) sugar until sugar is dissolved.
Refrigerate until thoroughly chilled. Add the milk, cream and vanilla; freeze.
Remove from the freezer several hours before serving. Chop mixture until
slushy; serve immediately.

It's pretty easy to tell which web site is an M-Web site and is made to work well with a mobile phone or PDA device. Instead of using "www" when typing in the address, just use "m", like "m.yahoo.com" or "m.kfdm.com". It was a domain trick set aside for "Mobile Devices" and often will get you a much lighter and stripped down version of the website (also light on the banner and pop-up ads). Where is my head right now? Welcome to the latest chapter in the GREAT ECONOMIC DOWNTURN OF 2009... Home Internet is back with the help of super slow (and cheap) dial up and the old computer is still as slow as ever (actually a comforting thought, believe it or not)...

I'm struggling with job performance right now, which I compare to sending a poker player out to win a Yu-Gi-Oh Duel. But, really, we have all taken on more duties as the employment base shrinks to meet bottom lines. Some excel at new tasks while others like me feel that this is not what I signed on for and good old post cold-war paranoia kicks in... Live in fear, comrades. It’s my fault, reverting back to old training, searching for any level of psychological comfort that I can find, but those dark places are just a little too dark right now. Which leads me to this diatribe...

When is a clunker not a cluncker? When it’s too old... Huh? Okay, here’s the deal. I’ve been making inquiries about the “Cash For Clunkers” program to see what options I can get for my mighty “amazed that thing is still on the road” Dodge truck. Bottom line, there are none. It comes down to me being told, by one auto dealer that “It’s cash for clunkers, not junkers”. Insults aside, my truck is too old and beat up to be put to death under the cash for clunkers program. Hey, at least the guy was honest with me – he gets points for that... other dealers would steer me toward the used car lot and offer me 2004 models for low, low 10.1 percent financing while telling me that I could always sell the truck on SouthEastTexas.com for much more money than they could give me. Actually, I’m a big fan of SouthEastTexas.com and have considered doing that in my original plan of buying a used vehicle with $2000 down and searching for some low monthly payment. But, what I’m saying is that there has got to be more than a few of us that just do not qualify for this... Right now, the majority of my savings are tied up in getting somebody to fix the electrical wiring in my house and getting roofing and repair for said house, all before the next hurricane pops in for tea and biscuits. Fear, live in fear, comrades...

MY POINT: Consider those who are participating in cash for clunkers. If Jane Smith qualified for a $4,500 rebate and purchased a $15,000 Toyota Corolla (TM), she has to make a $10,500 financial outlay. This is not a small amount of money. She is likely to take out an auto loan, which is only available to the credit-worthy. Furthermore, if she were in a tight financial situation, she would probably stick with her clunker, which is in driveable condition.

Well, the internet is fried at the house, so in stead of current events, here's a "Reader's Digest" version of my recent D.T.V. saga... Enjoy...

It was a dark and stormy night, when the Mays Gang rode into town... no, wait... wrong story. This is the saga of my DTV in Beaumont. When I first heard that free digital television was coming down the pike in the Summer of 2003, I was excited, being the virtual geek nerd that I am. “This is going to be great”, thought I, “free digital tv! We can pay lower cable fees because now local channels will be in better quality and all we’ll need cable for is those premium and cable network channels.” Couldn’t wait to see it, so, when I first got my $40 rebate coupon, you know I had to go out that week and get one of these miracle boxes to add to my truly disturbing distribution block of A/V wires jutting from the strained connections behind my television. Friends and family both, chimed in with chants of “oh you silly fool”, but I was of one mind to be the first couch potato on the block to get a look at the future of visual broadcast media. Racing home from my local Radio Shack, knowing the kids behind the counter by their first name and having them know me with that eye roll into the back of their collective heads as I walk into the door, I plug the little black box of modern marvels into back of my top-of-the-line, but horribly out of date 32” big tube hiding in the corner of my front room. Quick, rabbit ears! Let’s go! This is gonna’ be so cool! Plugged in! Ready to go! Scanning! And Suddenly!!!!! One channel...

Well, obviously, you know what the problem was... location! Move the Antenna! Rescan! And there it was on the mighty idiot box! Two channels... Well, this is a bit more like it, but it needs, say it with me… “MORE POWER!” Waiting two weeks until the next paycheck cleared and I realized that I could eat again, I plunked down $65 for an amplified outdoor antenna. I got it home and mounted it on the side of the house facing the front yard, best location in the open to get reception. Another rescan gets me three channels now, and one, the religious one, that has five channels in one. I think we’re getting there. It’s getting better. The sound is awesome, picture is ultra clean, and I can even forgive the stupid commercials that make me want to remove my brain with a salad fork – Holy Cow, maybe I do need a blanket with sleeves! Look at that color!

Wait, raise it! I then moved the antenna to the back of the house and mounted it about a foot above the roofline. Scratching around in the junk room, I grabbed a couple of RF amplifiers and jacked them inline and into the small black box of doom. Reset. Rescan. Oooo! Count ‘em! Eight channels including the 5 in 1 religious channel that was now adding a Glory-glory-hallelujah to the sound track of my digital television adventure! Count ‘em! Thirteen channels in digital beauty! Who cares that a strong wind could come along and take it all down for me in a gust or two! A Hurricane? In Texas? Are you daft, man? Okay, so maybe... if the power goes out we’d be pretty well screwed in hopes of getting emergency information on our portable TVs... maybe not every house has a generator... Well, at least there is my old friend radio where the native DJ always answer their phones and know just about anything going on in the area when you call, right? What lay-offs? Downsizing? Voice Tracking? Why are the phones off the hook?

Well, we’ll cross that bridge when we come to it as the first small electrical storms hit the area. This is a good test for the infrastructure. Boom, crash, bang! The antenna came though like a champ, fully amped the whole way... but... the box... the $60 adapter box that only cost me $20... the wondrous little black box that was gonna’ walk us into the digital age... the amazing little binary wunderkin that you’re gonna’ need to watch your local news toasted like a feather in a pottery oven, just a month after it’s 90 day factory warranty expired...

Now, you may not know this, but there are still a few old analog television stations out there on the dial (if you can still remember a dial on your TV, thank you. Now I don’t feel so lonely...). But, for the most part, they are automated rerun barns just filling space and devoid of any local news and personalities, but if you love reruns... hog heaven. Later that week, $45 for the cheap-cheap Digital Television box with a few less bells and whistles from the local grocery store and actually laughed out the store for attempting to take back the $60 brick for service. Any lessons learned here? Not really, other than “save your receipts”.

Well, ya’ know... cable is looking almost tolerable after all of this. ‘Might have been their plan all along... hmmm...
